For most graduates, the first job you have, post-university will probably be the first time you are exposed to professional behaviours. It is important to conduct yourself in a professional way because our reputation is important and whilst it is great having fun at work, we are paid to work. Therefore below are a few tips, which you might find useful, before stepping into the realms of the professional world for the first time.
- Organising your time
If, at university, you were used to doing all your work last minute, stop. It is often useful to visualise what you need to do, and this can be done by making a to-do list first thing in the morning and giving yourself a timescale of how long you expect to give each task. That way it might make a stressful day slightly more bearable. It also gives you targets to work toward, rather than letting tasks drag on.
- Keeping professional relationships with everyone
It would be fantastic if we could get along with everyone, however, there are some occasions where we might not see eye-to-eye with everyone in the office and it is often important to keep ourselves neutral in such situations. In such situations, it is best to maintain a professional attitude and ensure that you treat everyone in the office with the same level of respect that you give everyone.
If there is something that you don’t understand, don’t be afraid to ask. It is better to ask and to get the help that you need, rather than making mistakes. Of course, we can learn from our mistakes, however it is always important to communicate with others because it will give you an opportunity to see how other opinions and views.
It is important to voice your concerns and to communicate with others, but it is also important to listen to others. This will give you an opportunity to learn more about what’s happening in the office. Listening to others also shows that you care about other people’s opinions.
- Be yourself
It is important to be professional, but it is also important to be yourself. You should be able to have the confidence to voice your opinions within the workplace. People will always appreciate you if you are genuine and yourself.
- Ensure that you are dressed appropriately.
Often the way that we dress can impact our confidence and the way that we feel about ourselves. Equally the way that we dress and the way that we behave is a reflection of the company, so why it is important to dress smartly and ensure that you give the company a good reputation.
7. Being on time
Being on time for work, interviews and appointments is always important. Turing up late, like being inappropriately dressed again says a lot about our reputation so to ensure that you don’t fall into the trap of being late, plan your journeys before and if you’re taking the tube, remember that there are lots of apps available to check whether there are any delays.
